Terms of service

These terms cover your use of Sepia Ledger, a personal ledger for cigar collectors. They’re written to be read. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Sepia Ledger.

Who we are

Sepia Ledger (“we”, “us”) is an independent service built and run by Ian in Texas. You can reach us at sepialedger@gmail.com.

Who can use it

You must be at least 21 years old, and old enough to buy tobacco where you live, to create an account. By signing up you confirm that you are.

One person per account. Keep your password to yourself; you’re responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.

What Sepia Ledger is, and isn’t

Sepia Ledger is a place to keep your own records: the cigars in your collection, the humidors they rest in, the smokes you log and the verdicts you give them, and notes and reminders you leave yourself. It can also suggest a cigar from your own collection.

We don’t sell tobacco, take orders for it, or pass your details to anyone who does. Nothing in the service is a recommendation to smoke. Cigar smoking carries serious health risks, and Sepia Ledger is not medical advice of any kind.

Picks and reminders are conveniences built on what you’ve entered. They’re only as good as your records, and you remain responsible for your own collection and your own humidor.

Plans, trials and billing

Sepia Ledger is a paid service. Current plans and prices are on our pricing section. Payments are handled by our payment processor, Stripe; we never see or store your full card number.

  • Free trial. Subscriptions start with a 14-day free trial. A card is required to begin. If you don’t cancel before the trial ends, your first payment is taken then. One trial per person.
  • Renewal. Monthly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period at the then-current price, until you cancel.
  • Cancelling. You can cancel at any time. You keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and you won’t be charged again.
  • Refunds. Payments aren’t refunded for partly used periods, except where the law requires it. If something has gone wrong, write to us; we’d rather put it right.
  • Price changes. If a price changes, we’ll tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal.

Founder lifetime

Founder lifetime is a single payment, offered to the first 50 keepers only. It gives the features of the Collector plan for as long as Sepia Ledger operates, with no renewals. “Lifetime” means the life of the service, not of the purchaser. It is tied to one account and can’t be transferred or resold. Features sold separately in future plans are not included unless we say so.

If we ever shut Sepia Ledger down, we’ll give at least 60 days’ notice and a way to take a copy of your records with you.

Your records are yours

Everything you enter — your collection, smokes, verdicts, scores, notes and photos — stays yours. You give us permission to store, process and display it only so far as we need to run the service for you, including showing your shared pages to the people you send them to while sharing is on.

The shared cigar catalog. When you add a cigar, its catalog details (brand, line, vitola, size and leaf) join a catalog every keeper can pick from, so no one has to type the same cigar twice. Those details aren’t tied to your name and may stay in the catalog after you leave. Your own records about the cigar — how many you have, what you paid, what you thought — never join it.

We may study aggregated, de-identified information across all keepers (for example, how a cigar tends to be rated) to improve the service. It never identifies you.

Sharing your journal

Sharing is off until you turn it on. While it’s on, anyone with the link to one of your journal pages can see that page: the cigar, its verdict and score, your notes and its photo. Turning sharing off closes every link at once. Only share what you’re happy for the people you send it to — and whoever they send it on to — to see.

Fair use

Please don’t:

  • break the law with it, or use it to sell or trade tobacco;
  • upload photos or text you don’t have the right to use, or that are unlawful, hateful or harassing;
  • try to get at other keepers’ records, probe or disrupt the service, or get around its limits;
  • scrape, copy or resell the service or the shared catalog, or use automated tools against it;
  • share your account or resell access to it.

We may remove content or suspend an account that breaks these rules. Where we reasonably can, we’ll tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.

Names and marks

Cigar brand and line names shown in the service belong to their owners. Sepia Ledger isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by any cigar maker, retailer or sensor manufacturer. The Sepia Ledger name, look and software are ours.

Changes to the service

Sepia Ledger is young and will change. We may add, change or retire features. If a change takes away something central to a plan you’ve paid for, we’ll tell you in advance.

Closing your account

You can stop using Sepia Ledger at any time. Settings has a “Close your account” option that deletes your account and everything in it at once; it is permanent and cannot be undone, and any live subscription is cancelled with it. If you would rather we did it, write to sepialedger@gmail.com from the address you sign in with. We may close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms.

No guarantees

We work hard to keep Sepia Ledger running and your records safe, but the service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that it will suit any particular purpose. Keep your own copy of anything you can’t afford to lose.

Limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses — including lost records, lost profits, or the condition of any cigar or humidor.

You agree to cover our reasonable costs if a claim is brought against us because of content you uploaded or your breach of these terms.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas and of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Texas, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere. Before going to court, write to us — most things can be settled with an email.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we’ll tell you by email or in the app before the change takes effect. Continuing to use Sepia Ledger afterwards means you accept the new terms.
